As our social lives start to pick back up, our calendars are slowly being populated with weddings, parties and evening soirees. And, although we open the resurgence in socialising and events with open arms, the idea of slipping back into sky-high stiletto heels on a hot summer’s day can seem less appealing. Enter: the wedge sandal. An elegant yet supportive hybrid, the wedge sandal combines the height and style of a high heel, with the support and stability of a flat shoe. Win win! With the wardrobe multi-tasker offering endless styling opportunities for the warmer months, we take a look at how to wear wedge sandals, some styling tricks and what we will be pairing our favourite wedges with this summer.
What to wear wedge sandals with
When it comes to what you should pair your wedge sandals with, the styling opportunities really are endless. Wedge sandals sit perfectly on the fence of being smart and casual during the summer months so they work well with a huge variety of looks and occasions. Cropped capri pants are a great look for the summer months, as styled with our ever popular Lorena wedge sandals here. The cropped style is perfect for showing off a summer tan, and allows your gorgeous shoes to be seen in full effect. The wide straps of Lorena make a striking, yet supportive, silhouette, perfect for summer parties or barbeques. Or, if straps aren’t your thing, why not slip into a wedge mule sandal? Mules have been a huge trend over the last couple of seasons, and don’t show any sign of going anywhere anytime soon. A slip on style such as the Adelyn wedge mule sandals gives effortless style in a chic silhouette, perfect for poolside or for pairing with classic linen trousers or flared jeans.
Are wedge sandals in style?
Absolutely! Wedge sandals are a cult classic which never go out of style. They have reigned supreme for decades gone by, and resurface every spring and summer due to their breezy style and comfortable silhouette. Wedge sandals have been seen on the feet of countless fashionistas over the last few seasons. Actresses such as Jennifer Anniston and Reese Witherspoon are both regularly papped in their go-to summer wedges, and the leader of the royal fashion pack Kate Middleton often wears wedges in the summer months. Kate often chooses a espadrille style wedge with a platform, usually when attending an outdoor event on grass, as the wide platform avoids the possible sinking and struggle which can come with a stiletto heel or court shoe.
What to wear with platform wedge sandals
Platform wedge sandals can give a great boost of height, which can be very flattering. Due to the platform and the wedge, the sandals can look a little chunkier, so it’s best to play with proportions to find what best works to offset the additional height. A pair of wide floaty palazzo trousers, as styled with our Neave wedges, can look great with a pair of platform sandals. The satin effect and lime shade really contrast and complement against the sunshine yellow suede of the sandals. Or, for full 70s effect, try a floaty 70s midi or maxi dress.
How to wear lace up wedge sandals
Lace up wedge sandals are such a beautiful and feminine choice for the warmer months. In addition to giving extra support, the laces around the ankle and foot create a really dynamic silhouette, which is interesting from every angle. The best way to find the perfect fit with lace up sandals, such as Alyssa, is to first place your foot in the shoe comfortably, and ensure that the shoe is flat to the ground in order to have a relaxed calf and get the best fit for the lacing. Then zig zag the two straps in alternate directions around the foot until they meet, and tie them in a bow once you are happy with the fit. If you struggle with the laces slipping down your legs, which can happen if they are freshly moisturised, try spraying them with a light spray of hairspray for extra sticking power.
What to wear with espadrille wedge sandals
Espadrille wedge sandals are a summer classic which look great with pretty much anything! A true wardrobe multi-tasker, espadrille sandals look great with everything from blue denim and a white shirt to an elegant occasion dress. A closed toe espadrille style, such as Arabella, gives a slightly more polished look (and no need for a pedicure!). Why not try teaming a bright coloured wedge espadrille with a printed dress, highlighting one of the feature colours in the dress in the shoes? Or opt for a classic shade such as tan, black or navy, which will look great with a whole rainbow of shades? The espadrille wedge is such a versatile and wearable style, that there really are no fashion rules!
Are wedge sandals comfortable?
Yes! Thanks to their wedge profile, wedges are, for many, the most comfortable heel to wear. The wedge silhouette ensures that weight is distributed evenly across the foot, whereas a style with a thin heel, such as stiletto, leaves all of the weight stress on a much smaller surface area. Many wedges also have a platform, which helps balance out the height of the heel for a more comfortable fit, which can be easier to walk in. For additional support, opt for a style with an adjustable ankle strap, or a style which laces up around the ankle, and look for wide straps which can feel more comfortable on the foot.
